Truck tonneau covers are available costing from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars and everywhere in between. The quality and features of a tonneau cover is highly dependent on how much you pay for it.
As the prices go up, so does the quality and features of a tonneau. And more importantly, so does the amount of protection they offer from both thieves and weather. If at all you do not think that the tonneau cover you are looking at is going to cut it, we suggest you save up. It's better to spend a couple hundred more dollars than having to buy something that does not really fit your needs. In the long run, you will be happier.
ONE PIECE TONNEAU COVERS

One-piece tonneau covers are the ORIGINAL’s of the tonneau world. Back in the day, these covers were all that was available. They are relatively simple in operation and execution, and usually are a one big piece of fiberglass. There's not much to go wrong with them, only maybe the gas struts that lift them. However, the struts are also easy to replace and should last for years. These covers seal well and can hold up against foul weather, without any sliding areas or seams. As much as that might sound great, there are some drawbacks to a one-piece tonneau cover. The biggest is that they greatly limit what you can put in the bed of your truck. This is because they can only pivot slightly upward, due to their design, and most of them can’t be driven around in this upward position either.
So you really can not put anything tall in the bed. You can of course remove the cover, but they are big and bulky, thus making them more difficult to store. These covers can work for those who do not need to haul taller items or have plenty of room to store one. Others should look elsewhere.
FOLDING PANEL TONNEAU COVERS

To free the bed for more use, tonneau manufacturers came up with different ideas and solutions, among them are covers with panels that fold up and out of the way, allowing taller items to be carried. This type was further divided into hard or soft folding panel covers. Soft covers tend to be the most affordable as they are the easiest to manufacture. However, the amount of protection offered by these covers is little as a determined thief can just slice them open. To conquer this, tonneaus with panels made out of harder composite materials are also available, they are usually at a slightly higher price but offer more protection against weather and theft.
A couple of things should be considered when looking at folding panel tonneau covers. They all use multiple panels that fold on top of each other, but they are all not similar. Most of them fold up completely and can be propped up at the back of the cab. Some can not be driven in this position though, and that means you will not have full access to your truck's bed. You are gonna have at least one panel that will have to be against the bed rail of your truck. Although others can be driven while completely folded up, they do block visibility out the rear window.
ROLL-UP TONNEAU COVERS

Roll-up tonneau covers run the gamut from more budget-friendly models made of soft materials to more expensive versions that use composite material or aluminum slats for maximum protection.
Roll-up covers are popular because they have few drawbacks. Some might be a little complicated to install, but any tonneau cover is fairly easy to put into place. Basic ones can be a bit more finicky to open and may be more prone to leaks as they sometimes only use Velcro. Step up a little in price and you can get a solid roll-up tonneau cover that is easy to store when removed, easy to operate, and offers plenty of protection from theft and the elements.
